Assess a car import from Switzerland to Spain before you buy

Autohaus Zephyr is based in Zurich. Send us the listing and available documents for an initial assessment of the vehicle and the route to Spain. Switzerland is outside the European Union, so an estimate for an EU purchase cannot simply be applied. The initial consultation and search proposal are free; any physical inspection or later service is quoted separately.

  • Initial review of the vehicle and available documents
  • Seller and payment beneficiary identified before reservation
  • Written scope and costs for any additional service

01 / Before buying

A Swiss route differs from an EU purchase

Switzerland is not part of the European Union. DGT guidance for vehicles from outside the EU describes a route involving customs clearance and import formalities before Spanish registration can be completed. The specific requirements depend on the vehicle, its documents, the transaction and the rules in force when the case is processed. It is therefore not appropriate to transfer estimates or steps for a German vehicle automatically to a Swiss one.

Germany is our main sourcing route, but a Swiss vehicle may merit its own review if the car and its documents make it possible to clarify the process. Routes from Belgium or the Netherlands also depend on local availability and whether the vehicle and paperwork are suitable; they are not guaranteed alternatives and may not be equivalent.

What the initial assessment covers and what you receive

Using the listing and information you provide, we review whether there is enough information to outline the case, flag outstanding questions and organise the checks to request before committing funds. An initial proposal may summarise the scope of possible follow-on assistance and items requiring external confirmation. It is not a vehicle inspection, technical opinion, binding tax calculation or confirmation that the import will be approved.

The consultation and initial search proposal are free. If you proceed, we can quote separately for a physical inspection with an agreed scope and other specific services we can provide or coordinate. Before accepting a task, you will receive its scope, price and exclusions. If commissioned, an inspection covers only the agreed points and access conditions; it cannot guarantee that every defect or component will be checked or predict future faults.

  • A summary of information received, gaps and relevant questions for the seller or professionals.
  • An outline of formalities and costs that require confirmation by the relevant parties.
  • A separate proposal, where appropriate, for an inspection or later assistance.

Documents and requirements to verify

To begin, share the listing link, location, vehicle identification number (VIN), make, model, version, year, mileage, price, currency and sale terms. Ask for the seller's identity or registered business details and confirm who is authorised to sell the car. Before any reservation or payment, also identify the payment beneficiary and check that they are the seller or that their relationship to the seller can be verified.

Request legible copies of the available Swiss registration documents and ask which originals will be handed over, whether the vehicle will be deregistered for export and what evidence will be provided, where applicable. Gather a draft sale contract or invoice showing the parties, price, currency, date, vehicle identification and terms. Ask for the certificate of conformity (COC), if available, or the technical data sheet; disclose modifications, non-original parts, known damage and any available inspection history. The need for and sufficiency of each document must be checked for this specific vehicle.

The buyer, seller and professionals handling the case must verify which documents each authority requires and in what form. Matters to check include customs declarations and clearance, import evidence, transport documents and, if preferential tariff treatment is being considered, acceptable proof of origin. Swiss origin alone does not establish eligibility for that treatment. For Spain, confirm applicable taxes, technical documents, approval or modifications, ITV inspection and registration requirements with the relevant authorities or professionals. We do not assume tax rates, exemptions or approval.

Compare total costs without treating estimates as final

A comparison should separate the purchase price from possible later costs: transport, customs clearance, applicable taxes or duties, documents, inspections, adaptations and registration formalities. The applicability and amount of each item must be confirmed with the seller and the relevant professionals or authorities for the specific case. We will mark unverified figures as pending; an initial estimate is not a tax assessment or a guaranteed final price.

An attractive purchase price does not necessarily mean a lower total cost: missing documents, different technical specifications or a modification may require extra checks or work. We also do not guarantee savings, vehicle availability, customs acceptance, technical approval, third-party service coverage or timing. If essential points cannot be clarified, the practical recommendation may be not to reserve until they are resolved.

How to proceed and who buys the vehicle

Send the listing, your destination in Spain, intended use and any documents you have. Also tell us when you need to decide and whether you have already spoken to the seller. We will respond with an initial assessment, the missing information and, if the case appears workable, a free initial search proposal or a separate scope for the service you request. There is no universal timeline: it depends on the vehicle, seller, documents, logistics and third-party checks.

The buyer purchases and pays for the car directly to the identified seller. Autohaus Zephyr does not claim to sell every vehicle, act as a customs authority, provide a guarantee or act as an insurer. Our fees and third-party services are set out separately; a consultation does not reserve the car or automatically contract other work. We are based in Zurich: coordinating a destination in Spain does not mean we have local offices in Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia or other cities.

Before your next step

How much does the initial assessment cost?

The consultation and initial search proposal are free. A physical inspection and any later service are quoted separately, with scope, exclusions and price provided before you accept.

Who do I pay for the car, and when is the beneficiary identified?

You purchase and pay directly to the identified seller. The seller and payment beneficiary must be identified before any reservation or payment; do not send money based only on an initial assessment.

Can you confirm the car will be registered in Spain?

No. We can flag outstanding checks and documents, but the relevant authorities and professionals must confirm the requirements for the case. We do not guarantee customs clearance, technical approval, registration or exemptions.

How long does the process take?

There is no universal timeframe. Availability, the seller's response, documents, transport and formalities can all affect timing. Any planning is agreed for the specific case and is not a guaranteed completion date.
