Importing a car from Switzerland to Spain: what to check before buying

Buying in Switzerland may give you access to an appealing car, but the purchase, customs import and Spanish registration are separate steps. This guide explains what to check, how to estimate the total cost and what to confirm before paying.

What matters

Do not reserve a car based only on its advertised price. Identify and verify the seller and payment beneficiary before sending any deposit; check the paperwork and registration feasibility, and obtain official confirmation of the customs and tax treatment for your specific transaction.

Start by understanding the transaction

Switzerland is not part of the European Union. Buying a car there to bring to Spain is therefore not the same as moving a car bought in another EU member state: the transaction includes a customs import stage, followed by the steps needed to register the car in Spain. The Spanish Tax Agency provides for importing vehicles from countries outside the EU; the documents and obligations that apply depend on the individual case.

Treat this as three linked but distinct decisions: buying a specific vehicle from an identified seller, completing the customs entry correctly, and showing that the vehicle can meet the technical and administrative requirements for registration in Spain. Resolving one stage does not automatically confirm the others. Before committing, establish who is selling, who will receive the money and which documents will be provided at each stage.

Work out the landed cost, not just the asking price

Build a line-item budget and mark each amount as confirmed, estimated or still pending. Include the agreed purchase price, collection or transport, customs handling, taxes that apply to this particular transaction, technical documents or inspection, any required ITV inspection, registration procedures and necessary adaptations. Optional services selected by the buyer, such as a physical inspection or a particular delivery arrangement, may add further costs. There is no single reliable figure for every import from Switzerland.

Do not assume that the country where you buy the car alone determines its customs treatment, or that a sales description of the vehicle’s origin is sufficient evidence for a particular outcome. The calculation may depend on classification, substantiated origin, documents, declared value and the circumstances of the transaction. Ask a customs representative or the competent authority to confirm which documents and declarations apply; for Spanish tax obligations, consult the Spanish Tax Agency and, where relevant, the competent tax administration.

Hypothetically, two cars advertised at the same price are not equivalent offers if one comes with verifiable technical documents and agreed transport while the other leaves both unresolved. Compare the confirmed delivered cost and exposure to outstanding expenses, not only the headline price.

Verify the parties and payment before reserving

Before paying a reservation fee or any other amount, identify and verify both the seller and the payment beneficiary. Check that the name of the person or company selling the vehicle matches the contract or sale document, and establish who will receive the funds and in what capacity. If an agent is involved, ask for written evidence of their authority and relationship to the owner. An unexplained account held by a third party is a discrepancy to resolve before transferring money.

Ask for the reservation terms in writing: which vehicle is being held, for how long, how the payment will be applied to the price, what happens if availability changes, and which amounts are refundable or non-refundable. Do not assume a deposit will be deducted, can be recovered or is being paid to the seller; those points depend on the documents and the contractual identities of the parties. Verify directly with the identified counterparty that the car remains available before sending funds.

Make sure the documents match the car

Request the vehicle identification number (VIN), ownership and sale documents, available technical papers, declared mileage and any service records in advance. Match the VIN on the paperwork to the number physically displayed on the car, then compare the make, model, variant, first-registration date or year and other relevant specifications. If a page is incomplete, a translation is unclear or names do not match, ask for documentary clarification before committing money.

Also check what evidence supports the vehicle’s history: invoices, service entries, inspections and damage records, if available. A stamped service book or an in-car screen can provide context, but neither alone proves every repair or establishes that the mileage is correct. If there are gaps, ask for specific dates and mileage readings and record the answers. On a premium car, check that advertised options appear in the specification or can be verified; a sales list is not a substitute for inspection.

Confirm technical feasibility before arranging transport

Before paying or moving the vehicle, gather the available technical documents and ask what evidence will be needed for inspection and registration in Spain. The Spanish Tax Agency lists post-customs requirements and refers to documentation connected with ownership, importation and technical inspection. The applicable list must be confirmed for the particular vehicle and circumstances; do not assume that every foreign document will be accepted without checking.

Check whether a certificate of conformity (CoC), technical data sheet or other approval information is available and whether the car’s actual configuration matches it. If documents are missing or the variant, modifications, suspension, wheels, lighting, emissions or other features differ, obtain a case-specific assessment before estimating time or cost. A modification described by the seller is not automatically acceptable for Spanish registration. Ask the person handling technical matters to state in writing what is missing and which body or organisation must confirm acceptance.

Import inspection and registration come after customs; they are not steps to improvise once the car has arrived. The documents required by the authority at each stage can vary with the vehicle and application. Use the official Spanish Tax Agency and DGT information as a starting point, then confirm the procedure for your specific file with the competent bodies.

Choose an inspection level that matches the risk

A documentary review addresses identity, paperwork and consistency in the information provided. It does not establish mechanical condition or replace a physical inspection. If the car is valuable, its history raises questions, it is far away or the photographs leave important areas unseen, consider commissioning an independent professional inspection with a written scope. Before booking, confirm what it will and will not cover, what evidence it will deliver and whether it includes diagnostics, underbody, bodywork or operation checks.

Hypothetically, for a sports car advertised as having had bodywork repairs, a visual inspection may describe panels, paint and visible signs, but cannot by itself certify the structural quality of hidden repairs. Ask for dated photographs, vehicle identification in the report and clear observations. If a significant finding emerges, seek a specialist assessment or a second check before deciding. No limited report removes risk or amounts to a mechanical warranty.

Also ask in writing whether the seller offers a warranty, who is responsible for it, what it covers, where it can be claimed and which exclusions apply. Autohaus Zephyr can facilitate information and coordinate agreed services, but it is a sourcing and intermediary service: it is not necessarily the owner, seller, importer or guarantor of the car.

A practical sequence from enquiry to registration

A prudent sequence begins by obtaining the documents and identifying the counterparty. Next, check availability, the declared condition and technical feasibility, then request an itemised budget that separates confirmed amounts from estimates. Only once the seller and payment beneficiary have been identified and verified, and the written terms are clear, should you consider a reservation. The contract, payment, export, transport and documents accompanying the vehicle can then be coordinated.

Before dispatch or transport, agree who will prepare and submit the import paperwork, which receipts you will receive and who is responsible for each cost. Keep contracts, invoices, payment records, transport documents and customs evidence. After entry, confirm the inspection and registration requirements applicable to your file with the competent authorities; do not plan to use the car on the assumption that an outstanding step is already complete. The DGT publishes information on registering foreign vehicles, but you should confirm whether and how it applies to your origin and application.

If an intermediary coordinates parts of the process, ask for a clear account of who does what and on whose behalf. Request a written status update at each milestone and keep records of any changes to costs, expected timing or paperwork. Avoid relying on verbal assurances about delivery or registration.

Set clear conditions for proceeding or walking away

Decide in advance what would allow you to proceed and what would make you stop: unresolved identity or ownership, a VIN mismatch, missing essential documents, unassessed modifications, an inconsistent history or critical budget items that remain unconfirmed. An issue does not always rule out the car, but it should be resolved before you take on an irreversible commitment. For an uncommon model, weigh the appeal of its specification against the extra cost and risk of checking and registering it.

Hypothetically, a buyer might accept the cost of an additional inspection if the seller provides access and the report answers a specific question; that buyer might decline to reserve if the seller will not identify who receives the deposit. In both cases, the decision rests on verifiable conditions, not a promise that importing the car will be straightforward. Dates, costs, taxes, technical acceptance and payment terms need to be confirmed for each transaction.

If you already have an advert, gather the VIN, location, seller’s identity, available documents and sale conditions. Those details make it possible to ask focused questions and request an individual estimate, without treating it as a final quotation until the vehicle and applicable obligations have been verified.

Questions answered

Is Switzerland part of the EU for car imports?

No. Buying a vehicle in Switzerland involves a customs import stage as well as the later procedures needed in Spain. The applicable documents and treatment should be confirmed for the individual transaction.

Does the advertised price include customs, transport and registration?

Not necessarily. Request a breakdown separating the purchase price, transport, import, applicable taxes, inspection and registration, and showing which amounts are confirmed or estimated. The competent authority must confirm the customs and tax treatment of your case.

Can I reserve the car before receiving all the documents?

It is more prudent not to. Before paying, verify the seller and beneficiary, availability, written reservation terms and the documents needed to assess technical feasibility. Do not pay an unexplained third party.

Does Autohaus Zephyr provide the car’s warranty?

Not necessarily. Autohaus Zephyr is a sourcing and intermediary service, not the seller or guarantor of every vehicle. Confirm who sells the car, who is responsible for any warranty and its terms in the transaction documents.

A sound import starts before the reservation: identify the parties, cross-check the car and its documents, assess technical feasibility and calculate the full cost with the competent authorities or professionals. If those points remain unclear, pause payment and resolve them before proceeding.
