Imports · Practical guide
How much does it cost to import a car from Germany to Spain? A practical cost check
The listing price is not the final cost. To estimate the transaction, separate the vehicle price from any applicable taxes, registration, documents, transport and optional services. Each item depends on the car, invoice, buyer and destination; confirm amounts and payees before reserving.

What matters
Do not accept an unexplained total. First verify who is selling the car and who will receive payment; then confirm the documents, tax treatment, delivery and each applicable cost in writing before making a reservation.
The total cost: separate line items, not a flat percentage
To work out what it costs to bring a car from Germany, start with an estimate that keeps the vehicle price separate from transaction costs. Those costs may include VAT, if applicable to the sale; registration tax; municipal vehicle tax; the ITV inspection and technical documents; fees, plates and insurance; transport or collection; and optional services. These items are not all calculated in the same way, and some cannot be finalized until you have checked the vehicle’s paperwork.
Because Germany and Spain are both in the European Union, simply moving the vehicle between them does not incur customs duties. That does not remove taxes or the requirements for registering it in Spain. Nor can you automatically reuse a calculation made for another car: emissions, VAT status, available documents, municipality and delivery method can all change the result. The DGT outlines the registration process for vehicles from within the EU. Use it to identify the steps, then confirm the current requirements for your own file with the relevant authority.
- Vehicle price: check the amount on the invoice and what it includes.
- Confirmed costs: record the amount, payee and supporting document.
- Outstanding costs: identify the missing information or authority confirmation.

Compare like-for-like cars before comparing prices
A low advertised price does not necessarily mean a cheaper purchase. Before comparing two cars, align year, mileage, trim, equipment, described condition, documentation, sale terms and the VAT treatment stated by the seller. Ask for important specifications to appear in a verifiable offer or invoice; do not base the decision on an informal description you may be unable to substantiate later. If a key detail is missing, mark it as outstanding rather than assuming the answer is in your favor.
Also check what the advertised amount includes and identify the contractual counterparty. Request the seller’s legal identity, the invoice or proposed contract, the details of any payment beneficiary and an explanation of how ownership will be documented. Autohaus Zephyr is a sourcing and intermediation service, not the seller or importer of every vehicle and not a guarantor of every car. Before reserving or transferring money, the seller and beneficiary must be identified and verified; do not accept a promise to check them later. Commercial or document screening alone is also not a physical inspection or a warranty from the seller.
VAT: check the invoice and the buyer’s status
Do not assume VAT is always included in the same way, can always be reclaimed, or is never payable again. In an EU purchase, the treatment depends, among other things, on whether the car is new or used for VAT purposes, the type of seller and who is buying it. European guidance treats a vehicle as new for these rules if it is supplied within six months of its first registration or has no more than 6,000 kilometres. Either criterion is enough, so verify the date and mileage from documents, not just the label in the advert.
For used vehicles, a professional seller’s invoice may use different VAT regimes, while a private sale follows a different treatment. If a company or self-employed person is buying, do not assume the VAT is deductible: the answer depends on the transaction and the buyer’s tax circumstances. Before committing, request a pro forma invoice or written confirmation identifying the seller and explaining the intended VAT treatment. To establish the effect in your own case, check the paperwork with the Spanish Tax Agency or a qualified tax adviser. Your Europe’s general explanation can help frame the questions, but it is not an individual tax ruling.

Registration and vehicle taxes: use the right vehicle data
The special tax associated with a vehicle’s first definitive registration may vary with the vehicle’s characteristics; its officially homologated CO₂ emissions are an important data point when determining the applicable treatment. The purchase price alone therefore cannot settle the calculation. Ask for the emissions figure shown in the technical documents and check that it refers to the exact version, not a similar variant. Then confirm with the Spanish Tax Agency which rate and conditions apply to that vehicle and transaction when it is registered. The official page explains rates, but the vehicle’s classification must be checked against its documents.
Do not assume an exemption because the car is electric or hybrid, or because it is a particular version, without checking it. For municipal vehicle tax, identify the town where the car will be registered and ask the local authority for the applicable amount and criteria. If you have not chosen a municipality, leave this item open rather than filling it in with a figure from somewhere else. A useful estimate records the source for each amount: the technical documents for vehicle data, the tax authority for taxes and the municipality for its local vehicle tax. If a specification or destination changes, you can then see which items need recalculating.

Documents, ITV, fees and plates: check what is missing
Before reserving, request the available original documents and check that they identify the same vehicle: VIN, owner or seller, registration number, first-registration date and technical specifications. Ask whether a European Certificate of Conformity (COC) is available and what alternative technical documentation is proposed if it is not. The DGT explains the general documents and steps for registering a vehicle from another EU country in Spain; your particular file may require further checks, so confirm it with the DGT and an ITV inspection station before treating the estimate as final.
Include the relevant ITV inspection or record, administrative steps, fees, plates and the insurance needed for the chosen way of moving and using the car. Do not assume the vehicle can be driven in Spain with any temporary plate or cover: confirm who arranges the transfer, which documents will accompany the car and what conditions apply. If the car comes from Switzerland, the UK or another non-EU country, do not copy this outline without checking the applicable procedure; this guide concerns a purchase and transfer from Germany and does not determine the costs of a non-EU transaction.

Transport and inspection are separate decisions
Transport depends on the car’s location, its destination in Spain, the delivery method and the coordination required. Compare collecting the vehicle yourself, arranging transport to Spain or requesting delivery to a particular address using the same information. Ask the quote to specify what is included, who arranges the move, which documents and cover accompany the vehicle, and what happens if the collection point or method changes. Without defined origin and destination, there is no reliable transport figure; an amount that has not been quoted should not be presented as included.
A document review is not a physical inspection. If mechanical or cosmetic condition is important to your decision, consider an in-person inspection before buying and get its scope in writing: which components are checked, what evidence you receive and what cannot be assessed. An inspection can reduce uncertainty, but it cannot predict every future failure or replace any warranty terms offered by the seller. Autohaus Zephyr can arrange an optional inspection for a specific vehicle, with a quote in advance based on its location, type and the requested scope; review the service terms before engaging it.
Hypothetical example: turn a listing into a verifiable estimate
Imagine, purely as a hypothetical example, a German listing priced at €24,900. That figure is not enough to say what the car will cost once in Spain. First request the seller’s identity and check that the person or entity receiving payment matches the documented beneficiary. Then check the proposed invoice, first-registration date, mileage, homologated emissions, COC or other technical documents, registration municipality and delivery address. None of those details should be invented to complete an estimate.
With that information, put each item on its own line: vehicle price; VAT and the regime confirmed by the invoice; registration tax confirmed with the Tax Agency; municipal vehicle tax checked with the town hall; ITV and documents; fees, plates and insurance; transport; and any inspection or other selected services. Mark each item confirmed, estimated or outstanding, and state who must confirm it. If a document or tax response is missing, do not hide the uncertainty inside a rounded total: explain what might change and pause the reservation decision until you have a sound basis.

Before paying: a practical sequence to avoid surprises
Request a dated estimate for the specific vehicle, not a generic tariff. It should separate amounts payable to the seller from taxes, administration, transport and services; distinguish confirmed from provisional figures; and name the person or entity responsible for each charge. Also check what happens if an inspection identifies a concern, documents are missing, availability changes or registration cannot be completed on the expected terms. Payment, inspection, warranty and tax arrangements depend on the case and should be clear before you take on a commitment.
Use this sequence: collect the listing and documents; verify the seller and beneficiary; check the invoice and VAT treatment; confirm emissions and technical paperwork; ask the relevant authorities about taxes and steps; settle the registration municipality and delivery method; request an inspection if needed; and only then compare the estimate with your alternative in Spain. The DGT and Tax Agency provide guidance for their respective processes and taxes, but a general webpage does not decide your individual case. If the answer depends on your tax status, consult a qualified adviser before paying.

Questions answered
Do I pay customs duties to move a car from Germany to Spain?
There are no customs duties simply for moving a vehicle between Germany and Spain as EU countries. That does not remove any applicable VAT, registration taxes or Spanish registration steps. If the car comes from a non-EU country, check that procedure separately.
How can I find out which VAT treatment applies?
Request the proposed invoice and verify the seller, buyer, first-registration date and mileage. Your Europe explains the general VAT criteria for a new vehicle, but the specific treatment also depends on the transaction and the seller’s stated regime. Confirm your case with the Spanish Tax Agency or a tax adviser.
Does the advertised price include transport and registration?
Do not assume that it does. Request a written breakdown separating the vehicle price, taxes, paperwork, transport and optional services, and showing which amounts are confirmed and who collects them.
Can I know the final cost before reserving?
You can get a more complete estimate once the vehicle, invoice, technical documents, municipality and destination are known. Some items need official confirmation or depend on selected services. Before paying a reservation, verify the seller and beneficiary and understand the applicable terms.
The cost of bringing a car from Germany depends on that vehicle and transaction, not on a universal percentage. Separate the line items, keep the source for each figure and make outstanding questions explicit. If you already have a listing, Autohaus Zephyr can, as an intermediary, help request an estimate based on the documents, destination and services you choose. An estimate does not replace the relevant tax or administrative confirmation and does not make Autohaus the vehicle’s seller, importer or guarantor.
