Importing a car from Germany as a private buyer: checks, costs and steps

Buying in Germany can broaden your choice of models and equipment, but a sound decision depends on checking the vehicle, identifying the seller and calculating the full cost before paying. This guide sets out those checks and explains what to confirm with the authorities for your case.

What matters

Do not reserve or pay until the seller and payment beneficiary have been identified and verified, the car is still available, and the price, terms and foreseeable costs of your transaction are in writing.

Define the purchase by intended use and total cost, not just model

Before comparing listings, write down how you will use the car: typical journeys, passengers, approximate mileage, and any storage or parking needs. Then separate essentials from preferences. An engine, body style or equipment package that looks appealing in a listing may not justify a higher cost if it does not meet a real need. Include practical constraints too, such as where the car will be serviced or whether you need it by a particular date.

Set an indicative total budget, not just a maximum purchase price. Leave room for transport, any inspection you commission, paperwork, registration and work agreed after the vehicle has been reviewed. Those amounts cannot all be calculated without knowing the car, destination and transaction. For a tailored search, specify the model, fuel, total budget, essential equipment and delivery location. That helps rule out options that fit the advert but not your plan.

Compare a catalogue listing and a tailored search using the same criteria

You can start with a public catalogue of selected vehicles or ask for help locating a particular specification. For a catalogue vehicle, compare the information available for each unit: vehicle identity, stated mileage, equipment, photographs, known history, price and the seller’s communicated terms. A well-organised listing makes comparison easier, but it does not replace checking documents or prove the car’s mechanical condition by itself.

For a tailored search, provide criteria that help rank alternatives. For example, say whether you would accept a different colour for lower mileage, or whether one feature is essential while another is merely preferred. Ask for alternatives to be compared with their differences and anything still unconfirmed. Germany is not automatically the cheapest choice: compare full costs and condition with other options you would genuinely consider. Do not assume origin guarantees a better price, quality or history.

Identify the seller and payment recipient before committing

Before making a reservation or transfer, ask for the contractual seller’s name or legal business name, identifying details and written terms of sale. Check that the identity matches the transaction documents and clarify whether the person offering the car is its owner, a dealer or another intermediary. If the seller differs from the person or business receiving payment, require a documented explanation and verify who the beneficiary is and why they are entitled to collect the money. Do not agree to resolve these questions after paying.

Get written confirmation of who is responsible for each obligation: who sells, who receives the deposit, who hands over the car and who provides a warranty, if any. Autohaus Zephyr facilitates intermediation and may coordinate services, but it is not necessarily the owner, seller, importer or guarantor of the car. Before paying, also reconfirm current availability with the seller and check that the vehicle and terms have not changed. If bank details, the contract and the stated identity do not match, pause the transaction until the discrepancy is resolved.

Check identity, mileage, history and condition—and understand the limits

Ask for the VIN and compare it with the documents and the vehicle’s visible identifiers where possible. Check that the make, model, variant, engine and equipment match the advert. Request available information about maintenance, mileage, known damage, modifications and keys; ask what documents support each claim. An inconsistency does not by itself prove there is a problem, but it does need an explanation and documentation before you decide.

A document review or physical inspection can reduce uncertainty, not eliminate it. Autohaus Verified describes an initial filter of documents and available information; it is not a mechanical warranty and does not rule out hidden defects. Autohaus Inspected can be requested as an additional review with a report and evidence; confirm its scope, price and feasibility for that vehicle. Read what was checked, when, and what was outside the scope. If you see signs you cannot interpret, request a written explanation or an appropriate inspection before committing funds. No report can promise that the car will not develop faults.

Build a Spain-ready budget, item by item

List the car’s price separately from each expected or outstanding cost: transport from the collection point, delivery, temporary plates or transfer where relevant, any chosen inspection, paperwork, roadworthiness inspection, registration, fees and applicable taxes. Include preparation or customisation only if you request and agree to it. Ask each item to state what it includes, who provides it, whether it is estimated or confirmed, and what could change it. Do not treat an initial estimate as a fixed price.

Tax treatment and the outcome of a transaction depend on its circumstances and must be checked before you decide. Do not assume an exemption, deduction or tax treatment simply because the car comes from Germany. Review the purchase documents and ask the competent tax authority or a qualified professional about your specific situation. For registration, check with the DGT and relevant bodies which documents, inspections and steps apply to that vehicle. The European guide to cross-border purchases helps frame the transaction, but it does not replace confirmation of your own file.

Reserve only after agreeing verifiable terms

A reservation should come after you confirm that the car is still available and understand what the deposit means. Ask for a document identifying the vehicle, contractual seller, amount paid, balance, stated validity period or condition, and what happens if the sale does not go ahead. Check whether the deposit is deducted from the price and under what conditions it may be refunded or retained; do not assume the same answer applies to every transaction. Get any important commitment in writing before paying.

Read the contract and payment instructions together. The beneficiary must be identified and verified before the reservation, not only after the money has been sent. Also confirm what the advertised price means and which items are excluded, who organises delivery, and when possession and documents are transferred. If you need a condition before proceeding—for example, receiving a particular document or completing an inspection—ask whether it can be expressly included in the agreement. If it is unclear who is selling or what you are accepting, stop and request a corrected version.

Plan delivery and confirm the requirements for your file

Decide whether to arrange transport, book delivery or explore moving the car yourself. Compare what each option includes, where the car will be collected, the agreed destination, who coordinates delivery and which documents will come with it. Cost depends on the vehicle, route and service, so request a proposal for your specific case rather than applying a figure from another transaction. Before confirming, clarify how delays, transport incidents and vehicle receipt will be handled.

Prepare a list of documents you should receive from the seller and ask the DGT what is required to register that vehicle in Spain. Check the official page for requirements relevant to your case and confirm questions with the authority or organisation handling the file. Available documents, vehicle characteristics and the buyer’s circumstances can affect the steps. Do not treat a general checklist as proof that your file is complete: keep copies, check that identifying details match and resolve missing items before arranging the next procedure.

Use a decision pause and record what remains unresolved

Before accepting, summarise on one page what is confirmed, estimated and still outstanding: seller and beneficiary identity; VIN and specification; available history and known condition; price and additional items; inspection and its limits; reservation terms; transport; documents; and tax or registration questions. This makes it easier to compare two cars without confusing a confirmed fact with a promise or estimate. If an answer changes, update the budget and reassess the purchase.

Hypothetical example: two cars of the same model and advertised price could differ in available history, equipment, delivery cost or work still needed. You cannot decide which is better without checking those details and putting them in the same budget. If a seller will not provide essential information, the beneficiary is unclear or unresolved document discrepancies remain, you can defer or abandon the transaction. If you want help finding or reviewing a car, first request an initial assessment; confirm the scope, price and terms of any inspection or other service separately.

Questions answered

Is Autohaus Zephyr the car’s seller?

Not necessarily. Autohaus Zephyr provides a sourcing and intermediation service. Identify and verify the contractual seller and payment beneficiary before reserving or paying; any warranty belongs to the party offering it, under the agreed terms.

Does an Autohaus Verified vehicle have a mechanical guarantee?

No. It is an initial filter of documents and checked available information, not a warranty or proof that hidden defects do not exist. Any additional inspection also has a scope and limitations that should be reviewed.

What taxes will I pay when importing a car from Germany?

Do not assume a tax outcome without reviewing the specific transaction. Check the documents and consult the competent tax authority or a qualified professional; do not presume an exemption or deduction.

Is buying in Germany always cheaper than buying in Spain?

No. Compare the price, condition, transport, procedures, applicable taxes and services you need. The country of origin alone does not determine total cost or suitability.

A safer purchase starts before the deposit: define how you will use the car, verify the seller and beneficiary, check the vehicle and documents, and calculate the costs for your case. Then confirm the reservation and delivery terms in writing and check registration requirements with the relevant official sources. If you want support, agree in advance on the service and its cost.
