Euro NCAP and assisted driving: how to interpret the rating before you buy

A strong assisted-driving rating does not mean a car drives itself or that every version has the same system. The date, configuration and cooperation with the driver all matter when interpreting the result.

What matters

Treat the rating as information about a specific system and configuration. Check that it applies to the car you are considering and understand its limits; do not confuse it with a crash rating or autonomy.

A rating describes a specific assessment

On 4 June 2025, Euro NCAP published a comparison of nine vehicles. For assisted driving, the Kia EV3, Porsche Macan, Renault 5 and Toyota bZ4X received Very Good; the Mazda CX-80 and XPENG G9 received Good; and the MG ZS, Tesla Model S and Volvo EX30 received Moderate. These are results from that assessment, not a complete ranking of those brands or every model they sell.

Before using those names to guide a purchase, note the exact model and the result’s date. The rating answers a limited question: how the assessed system performed under that evaluation’s criteria. It does not prove that a brand is always better, that a car will behave identically in every situation or that later versions will retain the same result.

It is not a crash rating or permission to disengage

An assisted-driving assessment should be read separately from a vehicle’s crash-protection rating. Even when both pieces of information concern the same car, they describe different things. A positive assistance result is no guarantee that a crash will be avoided, and it does not make the car autonomous. Understanding the system and driving attentively remain essential responsibilities.

This distinction matters when an advert or review highlights a badge without explaining what it represents. Ask whether the cited result concerns driver assistance, crash protection or another feature. Without identifying the particular assessment, you do not have a sound basis for comparing it with another car’s result. Euro NCAP presented its 2025 findings as a comparison of assisted-driving systems, not as a general safety table covering every brand.

Cooperation matters as much as intervention

The announcement highlights cooperation with the driver, information about system capabilities and the system’s safety response. That is why assistance that appears to intervene frequently does not necessarily earn the stronger rating: it also matters how attention and control are shared, and what happens when conditions no longer match expectations.

For a buyer, this leads to observable questions, not guesses based on sensors or marketing names. How does the car show that a function is active? What does it display when the function is unavailable? How does the driver take back manual control? Ask for an explanation using the car’s actual controls and messages. If the answer is simply that the car does everything, it has not usefully explained either the system’s capabilities or the driver’s responsibilities.

Check that the car matches the one assessed

A rating is directly relevant only when you can connect it to the car you are considering. Note the model, version, system name and report date, then compare them with the vehicle’s specification. Do not automatically transfer a result from one model to another from the same brand, or from one marketed system name to another, even when the names seem to describe similar features.

Also check whether the equipment is standard, depends on a package or requires activation, and whether the information applies to the particular market and vehicle. A demonstration or brand video may show a feature without proving it is available on every configuration. If you cannot confirm a match, keep the rating as general context, not as proof of the equipment fitted to that car. Keep the assessment, verified configuration and unanswered questions together; this helps prevent a useful comparison from turning into an imprecise claim.

Ask useful questions during a safe demonstration

Ask for a demonstration, under legal and safe conditions, of how the assistance is activated and switched off, what signals show its status and how manual control is returned to or resumed by the driver. Do not deliberately create a dangerous situation to find out what the car will do, or divert attention from driving. A stationary explanation of the controls and manual can resolve questions without turning a test drive into a risky experiment.

Afterward, try explaining in your own words which function you saw, when it is offered, what indications may mean it is unavailable and what the driver must still do. If you cannot answer, ask for a more specific explanation before deciding. This does not certify the system’s performance; it helps you see whether you understand its basic use and have enough information to judge its relevance to your routine.

Turn the rating into a practical comparison

Compare cars using a short record, not one label. For each, note the Euro NCAP result and date, the model it concerns, the configuration you have checked and any questions about availability or operation. Then consider whether the features you confirmed fit your needs. The rating can help organise questions; by itself, it cannot decide whether a vehicle is right for you.

Hypothetical example: a buyer compares an EV3 with a car from another version or market whose system has not been identified. They can record the EV3’s Very Good result in the 2025 comparison, but should not assign a rating to the other car based on a similar name or brand. First find a relevant result, or clearly record that it has not been confirmed, and verify the equipment on each vehicle. That avoids turning a limited comparison into a promise about different cars.

Keep the result’s date and limits in view

The results published on 4 June 2025 are a dated reference. On their own, they do not establish whether software, equipment or versions have changed since, or describe the state of an entire model range at another date. If the car you are considering does not clearly match the assessed one, seek vehicle-specific information before relying on the comparison; if it is not available, keep that uncertainty visible.

A responsible reading combines the published result with checks on the actual vehicle and a clear explanation of its functions. If you are buying, request the system and configuration details in writing where possible, consult the vehicle documentation and ask what evidence supports any sales claim. A favourable rating is one piece of information, not a guarantee of absolute safety. Its value is that it can inform a better decision, provided you do not give it more scope than it has.

Questions answered

Does Very Good mean the car is autonomous?

No. It is the result of the assisted-driving assessment cited here, not a statement of autonomy. Check which functions are fitted to the vehicle and what the driver must still do.

Can I apply the rating to every version of the same model?

Not without checking. Compare the model, system, date and configuration; also confirm that the equipment is available on that vehicle in that market. If they do not match, treat the result only as context.

Does the assistance rating replace a crash rating?

No. It concerns a different assessment. Identify the type of result you are reading and consult crash-protection information separately.

Read the rating alongside its date, the assessed system and the configuration of the car in front of you. Then ask for a safe demonstration and an explanation of the limits. The assessment can improve a comparison, but it does not replace verification or attention behind the wheel.
