What matters

Do not treat a power or range figure as a guarantee of performance in every situation. Before deciding, check your journeys, real charging access, insurance quote and wheel configuration.

What has been announced, and what remains unknown

BMW announced the iX3 M60 xDrive on 8 October 2026. The company lists two motors, 450 kW (612 hp), a claimed 0–100 km/h time of 3.9 seconds, up to 754 km WLTP range and DC fast charging of up to 400 kW. It also says some figures are provisional and that adaptive M suspension will be standard. Orders are planned to open at the end of January 2027.

For a prospective buyer, it is useful to distinguish an announced specification from a final homologated figure and from a specific commercial offer. As of 25 October 2026, the car is not orderable. A provisional figure should not be treated as a contractual promise; the available information also does not establish price, options, delivery dates or the equipment offered in each market.

If you are comparing alternatives now, write down the information you need and mark it as pending rather than filling the gap with an estimate. When local-market terms are published, check that they apply to the exact version, battery, wheels and configuration you are considering.

Peak power is not the same as repeatable performance

The announced power figure helps position the car, but cannot by itself explain how it accelerates after repeated hard demands, how it responds with a cold battery or what happens at a low state of charge. Those conditions may matter more than a peak figure to someone who travels, drives on steep roads or regularly needs to overtake. No independent test is available here to establish how the iX3 M60 performs in those situations.

To judge practical performance, ask what conditions accompany any acceleration claim and what information will be available about sustained output. If you test-drive the car once it is available, assess its response smoothly and in legal, safe situations; do not try to reproduce extreme acceleration on a public road. A short demonstration also cannot replace information about behaviour at different charge levels and temperatures.

Hypothetical example: someone who often travels with passengers and luggage may value predictable response when joining traffic or gaining speed, while another driver may mainly want occasional strong acceleration. Those are different needs. Either way, decide what use would justify paying for a performance version before letting the most striking number make the decision.

Turn the announced range into a route-specific assessment

WLTP range helps compare vehicles under a common procedure; it does not promise a particular distance on every journey. Speed, hot or cold weather, elevation, carried load, tyres and climate-control use can all affect consumption. The figure announced for the M60 does not, by itself, tell you how far you would travel between stops on your regular route.

List your real journeys: the daily commute, a weekend trip and the longer journey you repeat most often. For each, note the distance, whether charging is possible at your destination and what alternatives exist if the intended charger is unavailable. Then compare those journeys with the final range figure once published, allowing for detours and avoiding a plan that depends on arriving with almost no charge.

Hypothetical example: someone who can charge wherever the car is parked overnight may assess the vehicle differently from someone who relies on public chargers and has no convenient option near home. You do not need to guess future consumption. You do need to identify the missing information and verify it when final specifications and reliable planning tools for the exact version are available.

Fast-charging power matters only if you can use it

A maximum charging-power figure does not, on its own, describe how long a session takes. The result depends on factors including the charging curve, battery temperature and charge level when plugged in, as well as the charger’s capability and how its power is shared. The announced peak is not enough to calculate a specific stop; it should not be turned into a guaranteed journey time.

Before considering the car, check which chargers you would actually use and whether they suit your routes. Look at locations, opening hours and access terms for the networks you are considering, and establish whether home or workplace charging is possible. If installation depends on permission or building work, confirm feasibility and obtain a quote from the relevant people before relying on it.

When fuller information appears, look for the charging curve, not just the peak. A session that briefly reaches high power does not necessarily make the whole journey’s charging stops shorter. To compare options, use the same route, starting conditions and arrival criteria; also record any detours needed to reach each charger.

All-wheel drive does not replace suitable tyres

Two motors and all-wheel drive may be relevant to how power is delivered, but they do not establish that the car will have more grip in every situation. The ability to accelerate does not remove the limits of tyre contact with the road or automatically shorten stopping distances. In rain, snow or ice, the surface, tyre type and condition, speed and driving choices all matter.

Before choosing a configuration, request the final wheel and tyre sizes and check whether the options affect replacement costs or the conditions in which you intend to drive. A different wheel setup may also affect comfort, noise or range; do not assume the effect for this version without comparable data. Ask which alternative tyres are approved for the car.

Hypothetical example: someone who often drives in cold regions may prioritise tyres suited to the season and a prudent journey plan, even with all-wheel drive. Someone who mainly drives in town may care more about replacement costs and comfort. The decision should reflect typical conditions, not an assumption that a performance badge solves every traction problem.

Get the complete cost picture before deciding whether it makes sense

The available information confirms neither a price nor an ownership-cost estimate. Before committing, request a written offer that identifies the vehicle and configuration, and separate the car’s price from extras, finance, services and any transaction costs. Check which items are optional and which are actually included in the offered vehicle; do not infer its standard equipment from a general announcement.

Also request an insurance quote based on the relevant driver, address, use and configuration. Premiums can vary with those details and the selected cover, so a generic number is not a sound basis for a household budget. If an insurer cannot yet quote the exact version, ask what information it needs and when it can confirm the amount; do not treat an indicative estimate as confirmed cover.

Include costs that could change with your choice, such as replacement tyres and charging arrangements, but use verifiable quotations rather than assumptions. Hypothetical example: two buyers may face different ownership costs if one already has charging where the car is parked and the other has to arrange it. Compare total cost over the period you expect to own the car, and document which items remain uncertain.

Questions answered

Can you order the BMW iX3 M60 xDrive now?

Not according to the information available on 25 October 2026. BMW plans to open orders at the end of January 2027; confirm local-market terms and the exact version when they are published.

Does the announced range guarantee that distance on a journey?

No. It is an announced WLTP figure, not a guarantee for a particular route. Route, temperature, load and other factors matter; plan with final data and a margin.

Does charging at up to 400 kW tell me how long a stop will take?

Not by itself. Estimating time also requires information such as the charging curve, battery conditions and available charger. A peak-power figure is not a guaranteed session duration.

The iX3 M60 xDrive has been announced as a high-performance electric version, but orders are not open as of 25 October 2026. The sensible move now is to prepare questions, not assume answers: compare range with your routes, check how you would charge, and obtain specific insurance and configuration costs when available. Final terms and figures will let you judge whether its performance and cost suit your needs.
