BMW iX4: what has been announced and what to check before buying
The announcement provides initial figures, but not enough to establish whether the iX4 suits your needs. Assess certified range, charging and coupe-SUV practicality, then verify an actual offer for your market.
What matters
Treat published figures as comparison references, not promises about every journey. Before committing money, confirm the configuration, availability and applicable terms in the destination market.
What is confirmed—and what remains open
BMW announced the Neue Klasse electric iX4 on 8 October 2026 and plans a commercial launch in March 2027. For Germany, the manufacturer quotes up to 828 km WLTP and a maximum DC charging power of 400 kW for the 50 xDrive. The 40 xDrive has also been announced; the M60 is due later. These are manufacturer figures: specifications and availability may vary by configuration and market.
For a buyer, the key distinction is between an announcement, the final specification of a particular vehicle and the ability to buy it in the destination market. A planned launch date does not prove that a car has been built, allocated or is available for delivery. Nor does it establish the equipment or total cost of every version. Treat a decision today as preliminary until you can verify documents for the exact configuration being offered.
How to interpret 828 km WLTP
WLTP provides a common procedure for comparing vehicles; it is not a precise prediction of how far you will travel on every trip. The figure of up to 828 km is the announced value for a particular version and market. Do not turn it into a range guarantee for another configuration, a specific route or different usage conditions.
To see whether the figure matters to you, start with your actual routine: daily distance, the share of motorway driving, whether you can charge where you park and how often you make long journeys. Then consider a demanding but plausible scenario, rather than only the best case: for instance, a hypothetical motorway trip with a necessary stop that must fit your schedule. Do not assume a particular real-world range; request information for the final configuration and compare it with your needs.
400 kW does not mean a fixed journey time
Maximum charging power is a peak, not a complete description of a charging session. The time required also depends on how power changes during the session, the battery level on arrival and departure, temperature and the charging point’s conditions. The announced 400 kW figure alone cannot tell you how long a real route stop will take.
Before comparing versions, request the charging curve and usable charging information for the specific vehicle, not just its peak value. Then model a familiar route with a necessary stop and check what is actually known about stations, connectors and power. In a hypothetical example, a high peak may matter less than a well-placed stop and a predictable session. Do not assign the iX4 charging times that the announcement does not establish.
Coupe-SUV practicality: start with the space you need
A coupe-SUV shape may appeal visually, but the buying decision should depend on how well it handles your tasks. Do not assume that the iX4 has the same cargo space, usable height or rear-seat comfort as another SUV of similar size: the cited announcement provides no dimensions or measured boot capacity here. Wait for verifiable specifications and, if possible, assess the actual vehicle.
List what you regularly carry: a stroller, suitcases, work equipment or bulky items. Measure the objects and the storage space you need, then check access, opening, loading lip and whether the seats fold as required. If you often carry passengers, assess headroom and ease of entry, especially in the rear. In a hypothetical case, someone carrying a tall box every week may care more about cargo-space height than a volume figure.
Choose a configuration for your needs, not its name
The announcement of the 40 xDrive and 50 xDrive does not, by itself, reveal every difference in battery, range, equipment or price. Nor should the M60 be treated as an option available now: BMW says it will follow, but that does not confirm when or with what specification in each market. Ask for a complete configuration sheet and distinguish confirmed features from pending details.
Compare versions using a simple matrix: certified range for that configuration, documented charging information, included equipment, options you need and the quoted total cost. Mark every item as confirmed, pending or not applicable to the destination market. If a feature is not in writing, do not assume it is included because it appears in a picture, a general description or an advert for another variant. A useful offer identifies the exact vehicle and equipment it covers.
A destination-market checklist
Information for the German market should not automatically be applied elsewhere. Before comparing a vehicle advertised outside your market, confirm who the seller would be, who would receive payment, which configuration is offered and which documents will be supplied. Verify the identity and role of the parties before making a reservation or payment; do not accept that identification being postponed until after a transfer.
Request written confirmation of availability, the total price and any terms governing reservation, refunds, inspection or warranty that apply to that transaction. For tax, registration and other requirements, consult the relevant authority and seek confirmation for your specific case and documents; do not infer treatment from a product page. If an intermediary is involved, clarify who sells the car: Autohaus Zephyr provides sourcing and intermediation, not the sale, import or guarantee of every vehicle.
Questions answered
Can I buy the BMW iX4 now?
The announcement gives a planned launch in March 2027, but does not establish that a particular vehicle is available. Confirm the offer, configuration and delivery with the party that would sell the car in your market.
Can I expect 828 km of range in everyday use?
The WLTP figure does not establish that. It is a certified figure announced for a particular configuration and market; assess your routes and request information for the exact version before deciding.
Does 400 kW tell me how long charging will take?
No. It is the announced maximum power, not a charging-stop duration. Estimating time requires charging-curve information and details of the vehicle’s use and charging conditions.
The iX4 announcement is a starting point for comparison, not a completed purchase decision. Compare the exact version with your journeys, check that the coupe-SUV format meets your needs, and verify availability, seller identity and terms in writing before reserving or paying.
